Visions Of Nature by Jessica L. Matern
Experimentation
From a plastic petri dish
under fluorescents and lab coats,
showerheads water every quarter-hour.
Nature is reformed:
the red and white become pink.
The Urbanite
Dime store packets of seeds,
cucumber and lettuce,
scatter in the foot-long planter.
Hanging from the window
above the cracked sidewalk
and exhaust fumes, tiny green sprouts
suffer in separating soil.
The watering can, dry under the sink.
Suburbanity
Mow Sunday
Trim Monday
Zap Tuesday
Fertilize Wednesday
Sprinklers Thursday
Mulch Friday
Enjoy on Saturday
The Countryside
Measured off acreage,
the wild is tamed, pruned.
Fenced and flowering,
subdued vines grow
only out of reach
of man's empty fingers.
Nature to Perfection
Accepting of death,
tired roots release and wilt.
A seedling stems and blooms
through fallen limbs, decaying leaves.
The forest thrives,
despite man's absence.
