The Night by Rachel L. Tenney
Darkness has fallen.
No light lurks up in the trees or around the bend.
An unexplainable hush falls, as artificial light splashes on the ground from windowpanes and doorways.
The moon glows and stars shine, and a silvery sparkle gleams on the mountains, valley's and plains.
The water is shimmery waves, lapping against the cool, wet bank.
Some of us lie awake in the blankets, wishing.
Yet, most of us dream, yes, the night knows all our secret dreams and wishes.
It wraps itself around each of us and whispers.
Alas, can you hear it call?
Do you hear it breathe, late into the darkness, early into tomorrow's dark morning?
If you listen, very closely, you may hear the soft heartbeat of the night.
