THE BEARD OF WINTER by Linda J. Sensabaugh
Night was seen eating the day
As the sun melted into the bay
Winter soon began to wrap
Unseen fingers 'round
The forest, the people, the town
Colored leaves fell in disarray
Sad: the season drew away
Naked trees now dotted the scene
The only color left was evergreen
Sailboats looked nailed to the ice
Unable to move on their own device
Clouds of winter would soon descend
The smell of snow was in the wind
The sleepy moon glided into view
The night was already special
But no one yet knew
Sometime in the cold of night
The landscape began to turn to white
The ground was soon deep in thought
At what this winter night had brought
Old man winter blew cool breath
And clouds departed to the west
The velvet sky was sheer perfection
For moon to see its' own reflection
Never would another night
Be this silent---be this white
The moon was seen pulling the starry canvas away
As dawn pushed mist across the bay
Now until spring the town will stay
'till crocus push heads towards the light of day
