Sea Thoughts From Far Inland by Jody M. Mosier

Sea-Thoughts From Far Inland

It is summer now, and hot.
The dry, dusty prairie stretches before me '
Rolling, vast, infinite,
Like the ocean I love.
But I am in Kansas now,
And the sea is far away.

In my mind's eye, I see it '
Blue, blue waters, with soft white foam
Crashing and whooshing against flour-fine sands.
The sea-gull's cry echoes in my heart,
But it is only in memory that I hear it.
For the seashore is far from me,
And I cannot hear its alluring call.

Wilted green plains replace rippling sapphire swells,
And a killdeer's call sounds, rather than the gull's.
Dry dust rises and falls in place of sparkling white sands.
And only the roar of the strong prairie wind fills my ears,
Instead of the murmur of the restless sea.

I long once more to sniff the fresh, clean air
From the place where land and water meet,
And to see once more that azure heaven
Stretching over a bluer still sea,
And seashells lying on the sands like jewels,
All mine for the taking.

But for now, I can only dream.
My ocean is far away,
And I am homesick for the sea.
