War Is Sometimes Necessary by John Parker

War Is Sometimes Necessary

My fellow Americans;
In the course of human events,
War is sometimes necessary,
To remove tyranny’s yolk.
Whenever governments or kings
Impose their oppressive control,
The people may take up sword,
And risk everything for freedom.
They fight, not only for themselves,
But future generations.
Generations who will forget
How their freedom was won for them.
Who enjoy the spoils of war,
While condemning the very thing
That insured their liberation.
They will stand in defiance
Of every last aspect of war,
As they cling to what it gave them.
They’ll have little sand castles,
And trophies of their achievements,
Placed on the hill of ambition;
Won through the spilling of blood.
They will scream their hatred of war,
As they revel in their freedom.
They shall protest in times of war,
Then exercise their right to vote;
Electing new presidents.
They will rail against injustice,
Perpetrated on foreign soil;
Preaching from their soapboxes.
And each evening they will return,
To homes built upon property
Taken by force from others.
This nation will be strong and proud,
Her people swollen with bragging.
They will not understand why
War is sometimes necessary,
Until their freedom is gone.
