The Reason For Her Pain by Tasha

Emily smiled her biggest smile,
It was her first day of school,
"Have fun and make lots of friends,"
Was her only rule.

But she found this hard,
When people looked at her with disgust,
No one sat with her at lunch,
She was the one no one liked and no one could trust.

But Emily kept smiling,
She kept being polite,
She was never mean to anyone,
She didn't get in any fights.

But yet everyone despised her,
She didn't know why,
But from now on,
Her hardest she would try.

She offered to share her snacks,
But people just laughed and ran away,
No one would smile back at her,
She had no one in which to play.

But Emily kept going,
She was not going to give up,
She would not let her life,
Fade away from her,break up.

Then one day a new girl came to school,
And her and Emily became friends,
Emily and Isabella,
Together 'till the end.

They did everything together,
They were closer than anyone could get,
But they did not know their friendship,
Had things to face yet.

But they were content,
They laughed until their stomachs hurt,
They were always hyper and happy,
Always alert.

But no matter how close they were,
They still got dirty looks,
And as much as Emily tried to ignore these,
They weren't mistook.

People whispered when they passed by,
Pretending they weren't there,
And even if they knew they were watching,
They would still stare.

Then one day they went to the park,
Pushing each other down the slides,
Their friendship and happiness,
They did not try to hide.

Then Isabella's father came running,
Telling her to stop playing with her friend,
He did not want her playing with Emily,
He wanted their friendship to end.

Their eyes filled with tears,
They did not know why,
Why was everyone so mean to Emily,
Did they want to make her cry?

No one knew her pain,
Her family was breaking apart,
And no one liked her but her friend,
The friend that must part.

So they both parted their ways,
Isabella moved schools,
And Emily had not yet gained the title,
Of the ever so wonderful "cool".

Then one day she found out,
The cold and honest truth,
The reason why everyone hated her,
The reason why she was miserable at youth.

She was not snobby,
Nothing did she lack,
The reason for her misery,
Was because she was black.
